SAVVY SHOPPER: Bruce Sanderson "CABERNET CALL": With today's economic woes amd the high price of California Cabernet Sauvignon and blends, the Pedemonte Napa Valley offers welcome relief... And don't forget cabernet Franc. Chinon is one of my go-to reds; it's hard to find this quality for such a reasonable price. Stock up while you can.

5 Wines selected in total, including:

Domaine GOURON Cuvee Terroir 2009 Chinon -  91Pts ($26 SRP): "Fresh, tobacco, damson plum, red currant, mineral."

Full tasting note Page 102: This delivers a nicely packed core of tobacco, damson plum and red currant flavors, with fresh acidity, a sleek, minerality finish and ample length. Should unwind nicely in the cellar. A texbook Chinon. Drink now through 2014.

Domaine GOURON  2009 Chinon - 90Pts ($17 SRP): "Black cherry, damson plum, red currant, licorice, iron."

Full tasting note Page 102: This is nicely focused, offering a savory herb note to hold together the core of black cherry, damson plum and red currant fruit. Hints of licoriceand iron check in on the finish. A very solid red. Drink now trhough 2013.

Domaine Catherine LE GOEUIL 2009 CdR Villages Cairanne ORGANIC - 90Pts: "A wave of toasty spice and mocha is followed by velvety raspeberry, blueberry and black cherry fruit in the broad, fleshy red, with a lingering mesquite edge framing the toasty finish. Drink now through 2013." James MOLESWORTH

Chateau ROCHECOLOMBE 2009 Red Cotes du Rhone ORGANIC - 89Pts: "Dark and toasty, but nicely integrated, with spice and espresso hints giving way to warm currant paste and crushed fig fruit. A racy graphite note lest the finish stretch out nicely. Very solid. Drink now." James MOLESWORTH
