SPECTACULAR and deserved Wine Advocate ratings for Domaine GALEVAN!

2010 Domaine GALEVAN Châteauneuf du Pape - 95 points

The 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape is one of the finest traditional cuvees I have tasted as well as a sleeper of the vintage. Made from 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre from 55-year-old vines, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a stunning perfume of crème de cassis, kirsch, incense, licorice and a vague notion of beef blood and roasted Provencal herbs. All of the fruit comes from vines planted in the northern end of the appellation. This exquisite, full-throttle Chateauneuf du Pape should drink well for 15 or more years. It is a major star of the vintage, and probably is reasonably priced as well.

A microscopic estate owned by Coralie Goumarre, Domaine GALEVAN was established remarkably, in 1780, but the first estate-bottled wine did not emerge until 1968. I was blown away by these four red wine cuvees, and both of the 2010s have jumped dramatically in score since I tasted them from the barrel last year. Coralie Goumarre has consistently made some of the better Côtes du Rhône over recent vintages. Both her 2011s represent sleepers of the vintage.

2010 Domaine GALEVAN Châteauneuf du Pape St Georges - 96 points

The 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape St-Georges possesses magnificent fruit in addition to a skyscraper-like mouthfeel, majestic richness, a layered texture, phenomenal purity and a classic style displaying plenty of bouquet garni, licorice, seaweed, cassis and kirsch characteristics. This sensational 2010 is soft enough to be drunk now, but will be even better with 2-3 years cellaring. It should last for two decades.

2011 Domaine GALEVAN Châteauneuf du Pape - 90-92 points

Coralie Goumarre's 2011s are also very strong efforts. Another star of the vintage, the 2011 Châteauneuf du Pape exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with dense black raspberry and black cherry fruit interwined with hints of pepper, seaweed and camphor. It will provide enjoyable drinking for up to a decade.

2011 Domaine GALEVAN Châteauneuf du Pape St Georges - 90-93 points

Similarly-sized, the 2011 Châteauneuf du Pape St-Georges has not separated itself from its sibling. However, it reveals slightly more spice box and pepper notes in its denser, more structured, fuller personality. It should easily merit a score in the low nineties when released, and be one of the top wines of the vintage.

2011 Domaine GALEVAN L'Esprit Devin Côtes du Rhône 89 points

Another beauty, is the 2011 Côtes du Rhône-Villages l'Esprit Devin. It exhibits a deep ruby color along with lots of raspberry, loamy soil, underbush, and bouquet garni characteristics. Deep and medium to full-bodied, it is, again, an overachiever in a modest vintage that is capable of competing with some of the finest Châteauneuf du Papes. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

2011 Domaine GALEVAN Paroles de Femme Côtes du Rhône 89 points

The 2011 Côtes du Rhône Paroles De Femme offers abundant notes of Provencal herbs, lavender, licorice, kirsch and hints of pepper as well as roasted meats. This fruity, up-front luscious Côtes du Rhône could easily compete with some of the better Châteauneuf du Papes in this vintage.
